Photos and information of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy graves, and graves of their grand children. (Children of James M. and Sarah (Baldwin) Pendroy, and Jacob Andrew  and Margaret (Brown) Pendroy) (Scroll down for several photos)

Picture taken in 1999 of Plot 65 in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe, Iowa. The far right grave is Jacob Pendroy. Wife Margaret (Boots) Pendroy is the one just to the left of Jacob, and their two stones are same size and shape. Records on page 59 of Monroe Cemetery records say: Pendroy, Jacob 12-OCT-1870 75 y 2m 5d. And Pendroy, Margaret 3-Nov-1874 81 Y 3d, w/o Jacob. Both of these are fairly legible, under close inspection, but the engraving is becoming somewhat difficult to read.

The tall, narrow, flat-top stone next to Margaret (Boots) Pendroy is William F. Pendroy, (William Finley Pendroy) died age 5 - Records on page 59 of Monroe Cemetery records say- William F. 14-Apr-1863 son of JM & SJ. (Son of James Martin and Sarah Jane (Baldwin) Pendroy. The word William can be made out today in 1999 on this stone but it is becoming quite faint.

Fourth from the right in this picture, 2 graves left of Margaret, is the grave of Margaret J. (Maggie) Pendroy, infant who died at age 7 days. This daughter was another child of James Martin and Sarah Jane (Baldwin) Pendroy. The records on page 59 of Monroe Cemetery records say: Pendroy, Maggie J. 27-Dec-1868 7 Days d/o JM & SJ. The Maggie is somewhat visible today.This stone  it is becoming hard to read but is better shape and can be read in certain lighting conditions today in 1999.

The 2 small matched stones with a metal brace on them are no longer readable today in 1999. However, they were identified in cemetery records years ago. They are two daughters Barbie, and Julia, children of Jacob Andrew and Margaret (Brown) Pendroy. Records on page 59 of Monroe Cemetery records say Pendroy, Barbie 13-Dec-1862 d/o J.A. & M. And Pendroy Julia, 23-Apr-1856 d/o J.A. and M.

The larger single white stone with round top on the left of the above photo is the grave of  Elizabeth Ann (Lizzie) Pendroy, age 21. The tombstone is still readable today. It has survived the weathering much better than the other old stones.

Lizzie was the 3rd daughter buried here of of Jacob Andrew and Margaret (Brown).

She died at age 21, and this author has found several mentions of Lizzie doing research. James Martin Pendroy, (Born 1862 and son of Jacob Andrew Pendroy), mentioned all three of these sisters  in the biography James Martin Pendroy wrote in his eighties. His biography is a wealth of information, not only about his family, but as an historical period document, and straight from the pen of a true pioneer.

Read (believed to be from a Monroe, Iowa newspaper) an article AND POEM on death of Lizzie Pendroy. Lizzie is buried in Monroe Iowa in Silent City Cemetery.

Author Note: The above information comes primarily from written records, but also from a Cemetery Census, done years ago, in which people went around and wrote down all, legible information on standing tombstones. There is a publication which lists persons by surname along with the section number of the plots of Monroe's Silent City Cemetery. The Pendroy surname has over 30 buried in Silent City cemetery in Monroe, Iowa,  a sizable number being quite old graves from the 1800s.

Of course many Pendroys are also buried in McHenry County North Dakota, where most of Jacob Pendroy's pioneered to. Others are likely buried in all the other various places they migrated to.

John Wiseman Pendroy is buried near Avoca, Iowa, and has a Civil War headstone.

Eli H Pendroy and wife Eliza Ann (Grubb) Pendroy are buried in the old Gifford Cemetery about one-half mile  east of Monroe, Iowa on what is locally called "Draper road". (Draper, Iowa is a coal-mining ghost town which existed in the coal mining area about 5 miles east on Monroe, Iowa.)

The grave locations of his parents, James and Mary Ann (Wiseman) Pendroy and grandfather: old Eli Pendroy,  are still not identified.

They are known to be in the Monroe/Otley , Iowa area, possibly at one of their former homesteads missing a headstone, in the location of the old Pendroy Family cemetery or in one of the local public cemeteries, but with missing headstones.
