Eli Pendroy was born as Eli Pendry to Quaker parents, (James and Jemimah (Reddick) Pendry) in Guilford County, North Carolina on December 13, 1776. Mary Lop(p) was born in 1775.
To date - all surname PENDROY on this site trace back to Eli and Mary Pendroy. Eli Pendroy's father was James Pendry, a Quaker. It has now been established with certainty that James Pendry's son Eli changed his last name (or became known legally) beginning as a young man, to Pendroy.
Eli was known thereafter in all legal documents (as were all of his children) as PENDROY. Details about Eli Pendroy's surname transition/change are minimal, however there is some documentation indicating a legal land-deed issue in the early 1800s was the reason why Eli Pendry changed his name to Eli Pendroy.
Because of the number of land surveys in early 1800s Ohio Territory, and the difficulty in finding the physical objects the land surveys are based upon, the Virginia Military District of Ohio Territory became the most litigated land area America had ever experienced up to that time in history. Numerous early settlers in Ohio Territory were involved in these issues, especially the very early pioneers. The Pendroy land deed transfers themselves are public records and are well documented and the Greene Co. Military Land Deed Transfers archived legal documents use the surname Pendroy.
The following records are in the Virginia Military District Land Index from Green County, (Ohio Territory).
1819 Vol. 8, page 81 - 100 Acres, Virginia Military District 2358 - Grantor: James Galloway - Grantee: Eli Pendroy.
1819 Vol. 8, page 81 - 100 Acres, Virginia Military District 2358 - Grantor: Nancy Grimes Galloway - Grantee: Eli Pendroy.
1824 Vol. 9, page 217 47 Acres, Virginia Military District 2358 - Grantor: Eli Pendroy et. al. - Grantee: Jacob Pendroy.
1824 Vol. 9, page 285 30 Acres, Virginia Military District 2353 - Grantor: Eli Pendroy et. al. - Grantee William A. Ellis.
(Read more about the Pioneer James Galloway in Greene County, Ohio and view a picture of his restored pioneer cabin maintained in a city park in Xenia, Ohio).
To date, I have not been able find the documentation authorizing, or of exactly why - James Galloway granted 100 or more acres of land in the Virginia Military district of Ohio Territory to Eli Pendroy.
All evidence to date confirms that the surname PENDROY originated in Colonial America with Eli Pendry/Pendroy around the late 1700s or early 1800s. This explains why the surname Pendroy has not been found in England, or the British Isles or anywhere else other than America. (IE: The PENDROY ancestors before Eli Pendroy were known by the PENDRY surname in the British Isles and upon their arrival in the American Colonies in the 1600s or 1700s. (The date of the James Pendry family line of Pendry into Colonial America is not established as of this writing).
The surname Pendry is found numerous times in the records and documents of England and the British Isles going back for hundreds of years, and is a well established surname in the British Isles today (England and Ireland), and also in America today.
It is important to note that many other similarly spelled surnames (in addition to Pendry) including Pendray, Pendrey and Pendery are today each their own distinct and separate established surnames in their own right - both in the British Isles and in America.
I have found many examples where the known surname Pendroy was inadvertently misspelled or transcribed in Colonial and early American documents, records and/or publications.(Penderoy, Pendroey, Pendri, Pendrii, Pendrie are some examples). Many of these spellings were either nonexistent surnames or surnames that existed only extremely rarely, if at all - in America during that time period. They are examples of the numerous mis-spellings or transcription errors which are so frequently encountered in early American genealogy research.

Eli and Mary Pendroy both lived through a lot of early American history. Eli Pendroy was born in 1776, the year of the American Revolution, and died in 1865 at the close of the Civil War in Iowa at age 88. Of course, some Pendroys in the earlier days stayed in the areas they lived in and/or migrated from: (Virginia, North Carolina/Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Colorado, North Dakota and some other areas of the country).
In many instances, large numbers of Pendroy extended families and their relatives migrated: either together, or within a one to three year period, and typically they settled in the same vicinity and often were neighbors in the new Territory being opened for settlement. This was especially evident as the Pendroy family moved from Ohio to Indiana in the 1830s where they pioneered and settled mostly in Delaware County, Indiana.
Also when the Pendroy families pioneered to Iowa in 1849-1851. For example: This 1856 Census page shows, as Heads of Household, these known Pendroys living in the same general vicinity of Marion and Jasper County together: (old) Eli Pendroy, Eli H. Pendroy, Jacob Pendroy, William and America Jane (Pendroy) (Albin) Burns, and Joseph Dean, wife Sarah Dean & son James Dean.
Also, this was evident when the Jacob Pendroy families pioneered into unsettled North Dakota territory in 1882-1883. The uniqueness and relatively small number of the Pendroy surname allows better documentation/search of records such as census, land and marriage records - not available to many other surnames such as (for example) Johnson or Smith.
Their early stories are those of American pioneers, and most people are proud of their pioneer heritage, if they have one. It would be difficult for anyone to read their stories, and not salute them as pioneers. As new territories opened up in the westward expansion and Pendroys moved across America, they were often among the early settlers.

Children of Eli Pendroy and Mary Pendroy
As discussed previously, Eli Pendroy was born as Eli Pendry to James and Jemima(h) (Reddick) Pendry of Guilford County, North Carolina on Dec. 13, 1776. Eli was born December 13, 1776 in North Carolina and died March 12, 1865 in Monroe, Iowa at age 88 years 3 months. Eli Pendroy was 74 or 75 years old when he moved to Marion County, Iowa in 1851.
Eli Pendroy's wife Mary A. Lop (or Lopp) died Feb. 6, 1841 at age 66 years in Indiana. (Note, one typed source of information in my possession stated her last name was Fox, instead of Lop(p). Although I use Lop(p), I have included this "Mary Fox" reference in the record, because no written document has ever surfaced actually verifying that her name was Lop(p).)
Jacob Pendroy married Margaret Boots Feb. 16, 1817 Greene Co. Ohio. Jacob Pendroy was born August 17, 1795 in North Carolina and died at age 75 in October 12, 1870 in Otley, Iowa in Marion Co. |

Greene County, Ohio

On March 24, 1803, Ohio government authorized the creation of Greene County, named in honor of General Nathaniel Greene, a hero of the American Revolution. The little log cabin pictured was the first meeting of judges of Greene County, who met May 10, 1803. This log courthouse, mill and two houses built for defense were initially enclosed in a stockade should the Indians become troublesome. About six years later, an actual frame Courthouse was built to serve Greene County, Ohio in 1809 at a cost of $3,396. In 1803, Eli was documented in Ohio near the Caesars Creek township area of Greene County, Ohio. This area is south of Xenia and East of Dayton, Ohio.
1803 was also the year Ohio became the first territory carved out of the Northwest Territory, and was opened for settlement. Ohio was rich with both pioneer/frontier/settler exploits and Native American history and events.
(Source: page 361, "History of Greene County Ohio: Embracing the Organization of The County, It's Division Into Townships, Sketches of Local Interest Gleaned From The Pioneers From 1808 to 1840, Together With A Roster of The Soldiers of the Revolution and the War of 1812, Who Were Residing In The County, Also, A Roster of Ten Thousand of the Early Settlers From 1803 to 1840". By George F. Robinson 1902).
Pendroy, Eli, Caesars Creek, 1804, came to what is now Jasper Township in 1803; lost his land, and Galloway gave him 100 acres.
Pendroy, James, Caesars Creek, 1819.
Pendroy, Jacob, Caesars Creek, 1819; Feb 6, 1817 married Margaret Boots.
Pendroy, Wm. E., Caesars Creek, 1826. (Note; William Ellis Pendroy)
Since I first read the published statement "Pendry, Eli, Caesar Creek, 1804, came to what is now Jasper Township in 1803; lost his land, and Galloway gave him 100 acres", I hoped I could find out WHO Galloway was, and WHY he would give Eli Pendroy 100 acres of land.

Another important piece of information found in Greene County records is the documentation of Jacob Pendroy's Marriage to Margaret Boots, including the actual handwritten marriage records using the last name "Pendroy", (Along with the Greene County, Ohio Military Land Deed Records) using the surname "Pendroy".)
Even though the surname of Jacob Pendroy is spelled "Pendry" in Robinson "History of Greene County Ohio" publication, there is therefore no doubt that it is Jacob Pendroy, who married Margaret Boots and went to Indiana, and then Marion County, Iowa in the 1840s.

From page 67 "Marriage Record - Vol. A Greene Probate Court" of Greene Co. Ohio. "Jacob Pendroy and Margaret Boots were joined together in marriage on the 6th day of February 1817. By Rueben Strong J.P."
A second example of wrongly spelled "Pendry" is on page 296 in the Robinson "History of Greene County Ohio" book, but which is correctly spelled "Pendroy" in the handwritten marriage record is the marriage of Eli Pendroy's daughter Elizabeth Pendroy to James Dean. Although I have no picture of James and Elizabeth (Pendroy) Dean, there is a picture of James Dean's brother William Campbell Dean in the Robinson "History of Greene County Ohio" book. (View more of page 296 in the Robinson "History of Greene County Ohio" book).

(Author Note: In the Summit township of Marion County Iowa 1856 Census was this: Joseph B. and Sarah Dean (age 24, and 1 yr. old son James W. Dean - I believe he may be a grandson of James Dean, in records as moving to Indiana from Greene Co., Ohio (with the Pendroy family) and dying in Indiana. This Joseph B. and Sarah Dean were neighbors of Eli H. Pendroy in Marion County Iowa 1860 census). This census page has both Eli Pendroys, Jacob Pendroy, and the William Burns family with wife America Jane (Pendroy) (Albin) Burns.

In researching the area history, one "James Galloway" was a regionally well-known person around Xenia, Ohio. That is James Galloway Sr., who was one of the very first pioneers of Greene County, arriving there in 1797, before any significant settlement had occurred. The person in Public records granting land to Eli Pendroy was "James Galloway".
Since Eli Pendroy's father James Pendry was on Flower Swift's 3rd Undated Militia Roster of the Revolutionary War lists in Virginia, it is possible a Virginia Military Bounty Warrant of 100 Acres that was originally to James Pendry - may have ultimately been granted (or re-issued) or come into the possession of Eli Pendroy as heir. There may have been some of the land/boundary litigation, which they stated were numerous in the area, resulting from a large number of wilderness surveys assigning deed ownership for the first time out of wilderness lands.
As previously mentioned, even if Eli Pendry bought the Greene County land originally with cash or by a promissory note loan, some type of a legal land-deed issue(s) could well be a reason why Eli Pendry would change his name to Eli Pendroy. (To allow the new land deed transaction(s) mentioned in the publication to proceed without delay).

In 1784 Virginia, under the basis of the "Northwest Ordinance", and after earlier controversy & compromise, claimed (and ultimately won rights to) a portion of Ohio Territory, based on Charters granted by the Kings of England.
This land became the "Virginia Military District (VMD)". Virginia Military District lands are found in 23 Ohio Counties (including Greene County, Ohio. (See Map).
(Source: "Ohio's Major Land Surveys", Thomas E. Ferguson, Auditor of State.)
This irregularly shaped land district was reserved by the State of Virginia to satisfy Virginia's Military Bounty Warrants. The VMD covered 4,204,800 acres of land. Over 16,125 original land surveys are found in the Virginia Military District, creating a patchwork of surveys. Because of the number of land surveys, and the difficulty of finding the physical objects they are based upon, this is probably the most litigated land area in Ohio.
The Land Bounties given to her Revolutionary Soldiers were very generous. Due to various Virginia laws, the bounties ranged from 100 to 15,000 acres based on rank. Length of Service over six years also increased the bounty. The heirs of a Soldier could be entitled to the Bounty. Virginia permitted a five percent error factor for the surveys, but this was often exceeded.
By Act of Congress dated May 30, 1830 Virginia Military Warrants could be exchanged for Land Scrip. Land Scrip could be used to acquire any US Government lands open for entry at private sale. The Federal Government issued land Scrip for 1,041,976 Acres in exchange of Virginia Military Warrants. (Note: Soldiers Applications are filed at the Virginia State Library, Richmond.)

Pendroys in Indiana
Deed Books of Delaware County 1827 - 1860: Books 1 -22 Alpha, P -Q Partial List: (Those Delaware County, Indiana 1827-1860 land deeds with Pendroy surname only.) This list has useful genealogy information and timelines (IE: Book 1 beginning in 1827, and Book 22 ending in 1860) for researchers, and in some cases possibly documenting land deeded to children and/or relatives, either being given to them at marriage, or being sold to them or other persons of unknown relationship.)One item of interest I found here was that the Eli Pendroy (Son of William Ellis Pendroy, and brother of John R. Pendroy) who died at age 40 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana had the full name Eli Tyler Pendroy. Another item of interest is an "Eli L Pendroy" shown, this person is not identified or known of, as far as I am aware, but that assumes the middle initial 'L" is transcribed correctly. |

Pendroys in Iowa
Many of the Pendroys left Indiana as the Iowa territory was opened up for settlement in. Pendroy families, including those of Eli Pendroy , Jacob Pendroy , James Pendroy , Jacob Andrew Pendroy , James Martin Pendroy , and Eli H. Pendroy , settled in Marion County, Iowa - in (Summit Township) in 1849 to 1851.
In addition: Sarah Ann (Pendroy) Burns, widow of Abraham P. Burns that died in Civil War, was also living in the general vicinity, in (Cambridge, Iowa area) Elkhart Township of Polk County, Iowa, about 40 miles away. She lived with or near her daughter Margaret Anna (Burns) Zook (Mrs. Henry Seward Zook) in Cambridge Iowa.
(Old) Eli Pendroy is in the 1856 Marion Co. IA. census. Old Eli Pendroy was living by himself, at a house near to Jacob Pendroy. Eli Pendroy does have "Sr." written by his name in the 1856 census, and Eli H. Pendroy (that married Eliza Ann Grubb), has Eli Pendroy Jr. written by the census taker. They are on the same page and it appears each was living alone near the other Pendroys. This was the notation I mentioned because I originally thought it meant they were father and son, but records and numerous legal documents later showed James and Mary Ann (Wiseman) Pendroy were Eli H. Pendroy's parents. I later learned this was a frequently found practice in census documents when different generations with the same name are on the same census page.
In fact, one of the legal documents specifically states that Eli H. Pendroy was a son of James and Mary Ann (Wiseman) Pendroy , and Eli H. Pendroy also signed a document stating that.

It is interesting to note that old Eli Pendroy, and his son's Jacob Pendroy, and James Pendroy who married Mary Ann Wiseman, all listed their place of birth as North Carolina.
Jacob Pendroy is the first known Pendroy family to pioneer into the Marion and Jasper County Iowa area near Monroe, in 1849. The 1850 census also records, as was known, that Jacob Pendroy and family came 1 year earlier to Marion County in 1849.

The petition was granted and the first Monday in April fixed as the time for holding the organization election." John C. Donnel was appointed to carry out the provisions of the order, and the house of Jacob C. Brown was designated as the place for holding the first election."
In addition, some of the Pendroys were in the first Methodist Episcopal (Methodist) Church in Marion County, Iowa in 1855 near Otley Iowa, which is 4 miles S.E. of Monroe, Iowa.
Their involvement in starting the first Methodist Episcopal (Methodist) Church in Marion County, Iowa in 1855 is published in the "History of Marion County Iowa on pages 690-691":
Methodist Episcopal Church: The first M.E. Church was organized by Reverend R.B. Allender, in 1855. The following persons constituted the class: W.B. Keeler and wife, Boyd Donnel and wife, Thos. The pastors were:
A frame church was erected during the summer of 1870. It is 30 by 40 feet, will comfortably seat 250 and cost $2,500. The church when first organized used the Summit Township school-house as a place of worship. There is a Sunday School in connection with the church, with an attendance of about forty. The Superintendent is Wm. Durose."
An Otley, Iowa resident informed me that this old church was remodeled into a house and is a house being lived in today.
Surnames Young, Honnold, and Donnel were all married to Pendroys and many were neighbors. Mrs. John Young was Nancy M Pendroy b 29 May, 1829 Ohio - m John William Young. (Nancy M. was Jacob Pendroy's daughter)
Margaret Jane (Berry) Donnel, born 02/23/1848 was William Preston and Rachel (Pendroy) Berry's daughter. Rachel was Jacob's daughter. Margaret Jane Berry married Thomas S. Donnel who was the son of John C. and Nancy Donnel. John Baldwin Pendroy (son of James M. Pendroy) was married to Forrest Belle Honnold.

In 1856 census 10 year old (Step) Grand daughter Jane Mosier is listed in Jacob Pendroy household and states she was born in Mills County Iowa.
Much early information about Jacob Pendroy was gleaned from a letter from Nellie Byers, written several decades ago now, which I received from a Pendroy family from Aberdeen SD in the 1980s. The letter is in the possession now of many families doing research on the surname Pendroy. In fact, Nellie Byers' letter was in a way the genesis of my research and certainly this site.

These biographies contain information about Pendroys who pioneered as settlers in North Dakota. These Pendroys left together from Iowa in 1883 and founded Pendroy, North Dakota, in the Velva area in McHenry County. Later in Montana, two members of this group - Levi Boots Pendroy and James Andrew Pendroy founded the present day town of Pendroy, Montana.
It can be said that this group of Pendroys (descendants of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy and some of their In-Laws ) had impact on McHenry County North Dakota in the 1880s.
The list of "FIRSTS" to their credit in McHenry Co. ND deserves appreciation.

Daniel and Jemima J. (Pendroy) Pace - Mosier
Jemima Jane Pendroy was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy
1999 Grave stone of Daniel and Jemima J. (Pendroy) Mosier at Silent City cemetery
Marion County Iowa marriage records used the name "Jennie Pendroy" for her once, and also "JJ Pendroy". She was born March 21, 1821.
According to marriage records in Delaware County Indiana, Jemima Jane Pendroy had earlier married Horatio Pace in Delaware county Indiana on 12-02-1841. View marriage information of Horatio Pace and Jemima Jane Pendroy
Go to main PACE pageJemima Jane (Pendroy) Pace and her 3 sons Jacob Horatio Pace, James Madison Pace, and Marion Pace came to Marion County Iowa with Jemima's parents Jacob and Margaret Pendroy some time in the late 1840's.
The 1850 Marion County Iowa census records of Jacob and Margaret Boots Pendroy household list 8 year old "Marion Pace", born 1842 in Indiana. This "Marion Pace" was one of Horatio and Jemima Jane (Pendroy) Pace's children.
The exact circumstances of why 8 year old Marion Pace was at the house of grandparents Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy in 1850 during the county census are not known. The child may have just been visiting when the census taker stopped by. Typically they wrote down who ever was in the house.
Recently I found an 1858 legal document that appears to have the original signature of Jacob Pendroy and J. M. Pendroy.
The document appoints Jacob Pendroy legal Guardian of Jacob Pace, James Pace and Marion Pace. (These Pace children were Jacob's grand children, sons of Jemima Jane Pendroy Pace - later Mosier.)

Jemima Jane Pendroy (Pace) later married Mr. Daniel Mosier. Daniel Mosier had children from a previous marriage. Jemima Jane Pendroy and Horatio Pace also had the 3 sons of their own together from that previous marriage.
Daniel Mosier and Jemima also had children of their own together. Jemima is buried in Monroe, Iowa, with husband Daniel Mosier. Author note: Mr. Daniel Mosier is a name that is encountered frequently in early history of the area. In 1846, and 1847 and 1849 the History of Jasper County mentions his selection as a Grand Jury member. In 1847, the Assessment rolls for the county of Jasper showed Daniel Mosier and is listed with the assessed value of his farm. In 1850 Daniel Mosier was selected as a juror for the first Coroner's Inquest on April 12, 1850.
According to the Monroe Mirror article about the first "Old Settlers" Reunion, Dan Mosier was in the area in 1843. That is the year Monroe Iowa was "officially settled".In addition "Mrs. Joel Worth and Dan Mosier were introduced as the oldest old settler woman and man now living" (In 1897 Dan Mosier would have been 83. The article cited six other people present who were there in 1843: (James A. Tool, John M. Tool, Allan Tice, David Tice, Mrs. Huldah McClintock and John Williams.)

The letter is in the possession now of many families doing research on the surname Pendroy. In fact, Nellie Byers' letter was in a way the genesis of my research and certainly this site.
Elizabeth Ann Pendroy was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Boots Pendroy. She was born Dec. 17, 1816 in Indiana.
Elizabeth Pendroy married Isaac Byers. The Isaac Byers family was also in Marion County Iowa in the 1856 census - vol. 57.

Isaac and Elizabeth (Pendroy) Byers appear to have originally gone to Iowa in 1853, three years prior to the 1856 census. Their youngest son, Noah, was born in Marion Co. in August of 1854. They were in Marion Co. for the 1856 census.
Within a few years, evidence shows they ended up together at an 80-acre farm in Winchester, Van Buren County, Iowa, and both are buried at nearby Winchester Cemetery.

John and Nancy (Pendroy) Young
Known biographical Information
Nancy Pendroy was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy. She was born May 29, 1829 in Ohio. Nancy May Pendroy married John Young - Delaware Co. Indiana 03-26-1845. Marion County Iowa 1856 census volume 57, Summit Township showing James and Mary Ann (Wiseman) Pendroy family. Also shows neighboring related families son-in-law John Marmon and John Young, married to Jacob Pendroy's daughter.Nancy (Pendroy) Young died Sept. 18 1903 in Velva, North Dakota in McHenry County. Nancy moved west into the Dakota Territory, with the Pendroys that founded Pendroy, North Dakota in 1883. Since records state John Young died July 12, 1883 at about age 60, it appears Nancy Young was newly widowed when she moved to North Dakota with all the Pendroy migration.
Nancy May (Pendroy) Young, and her husband John William Young and children, came to the Monroe, Iowa area (near the Marion and Jasper County line) either with, or shortly after her parents, Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy.
The 1850 census found John and Nancy (Pendroy) Young in extreme southern Jasper County, near Monroe, IA., just across the county line north of where Jacob lived in Summit Township in Marion County, IA. Here is the 1850 census information. Somehow the family is in both county census records. Don't know if they moved or because they lived on or near county line.

Jemima J (above), is clearly and legibly recorded in the Marion County census as "JEMIMA J.". I mention this because in the Jasper county census, which is on the Internet, they transcribed this child as "Junina".
Jemima was old Eli Pendroy's Quaker mother's name. Since this Jemima J is not shown in current records of adult children I have for this family, details of what became of this Jemima J. child are not known.

(Author note: It was interesting to learn several years ago that one of my ancestors (a Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather to me) from my line back through my Great grandmother Eliza Ann (Grubb) Pendroy (Mrs. Eli H. Pendroy) was in the Revolutionary War (Solomon Tharp). I thought it would be good to add the specific details here.
Eliza Ann (Grubb) Pendroy (Mrs. Eli H. Pendroy) was born August 27, 1837 in Indiana. She died May 1, 1871 at age of 34.
Eliza Ann Grubb's parents were Pleasant H. and Martha (Reed) Grubb.
Martha (Reed) Grubb's parents were John and Ruth (Tharp) Reed. (John Reed's second wife was named Mary).
Ruth (Tharp) Reed's father was Solomon Tharp, the well documented Revolutionary War Soldier
Solomon Tharp, New Jersey, Pvt. in N. J. Regiment - Revolutionary War soldier, 1777-1778. Was at Valley Forge 1777-1778, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Springfield and Yorktown. He marched with the New Jersey Continental Army through western New York, Seneca Indian Settlements.

John and Ruth (Tharp) Reed's children included daughters Martha and Mary. (John Reed's second wife was named Mary). Daughters Martha Reed married Pleasant Grubb and Mary Reed married Stephen Marmon.
John Clark Marmon married James and Mary Ann (Wiseman) Pendroy's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Pendroy.
In page 369 Federal Census of Jasper County Iowa - 1850, Eleven year old Eliza Ann Grubb was listed in the home of her grandfather: John Reed - age 72 in 1850 census. John Reed lived with his second wife Mary at this time.
Eleven year old Eliza Ann Grubb may have just been visiting, or may have been helping out at the grandfather's home, as younger family members did frequently in that time period.
It is possible John Reed may have been in somewhat failing health around that time, as page 361 of the 1878 History of Jasper County, Iowa states "April 6, 1852, Judge Rickman appointed Manly Gifford executor of the will of John Reed, deceased."
